Evidence Based Therapies
Facilitated by: Rochelle I. Frank, PhD
Evidence-Based Therapies: What are they and how do you find the one that works for you?
When choosing a therapist, it is important to understand which services are being offered, what can be expected from the different types of treatment available, and whether or not they are appropriate for each particular set of difficulties and the goals one is trying to accomplish.
Advances in behavioral health research over the past 30 years have resulted in highly structured interventions with predictable and proven outcomes, known as "evidence-based therapies." Cognitive-behavioral therapy is perhaps the most well-known of these modalities, though a number of other highly effective treatments - including Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive-Behavioral Analysis System of Psychotherapy, and Prolonged Exposure Therapy - now are available to clinicians and can help individuals reclaim their lives.
Dr. Frank provides a clear introduction to this subject, with recommendations for interviewing therapists to find the "best fit" to increase the likelihood of a more successful course of treatment. This workshop enhances understanding of the terminology and history of evidence-based therapies, helping participants learn about specific treatment options so that they can more easily navigate the behavioral health system and make effective choices for their unique situations. An overview of current state-of-the-art psychological treatments for mood disorders, anxiety, trauma, and other related issues also will be presented. Interactive exercises will offer direct exposure to (and experiencing of) actual clinical interventions associated with different evidence-based therapies. Participants also will learn how assessments are conducted, principles and methods of goal setting in the therapeutic process, and the critical role of progress monitoring in enhancing consumers' role on the treatment team and improving outcomes.
