Nutrition Workshop

Facilitated by: Ruth Leyse-Wallace Ph.D.

Nutrition is important for both the body and brain . . . nutrition can affect your mood, your emotions, your ability to concentrate, your physical and mental energy level. Good nutrition supports mental health. Everyone's eating habits are different, activity levels, medical history, family history, abilities and interests are personal. Medications may affect, or be affected by, eating schedule, foods and nutrients. Nutrition, activity and health plans need to be individualized.

Focus on Nutrition:

This section of the Nutrition Workshop will provide general nutrition knowledge as well as information from scientific literature linking nutrition and nutrients to bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and depression. A model for degrees of nutrition depletion will be discussed so participants will understand the range of nutritional health and where they may fit. Some of the potential physical signs of nutritional depletion and toxicity will be discussed.

Focus on You:

In this section of the Nutrition Workshop participants will use take-home worksheets to work with details of their personal food and beverage intake, supplements used, family history, and other information to begin a Nutritional Assessment. Using health criteria provided in the workshop this material will be used to create a beginning nutritional plan for personal use. Participants will be requested to bring health and diet information to the conference that will add to the validity of their nutritional assessment. Any personal information will remain totally private.

Attendees at the Nutrition Workshop will receive information on resources (web sites, references, criteria, etc.) for later personal use if desired.
