Whole Person Workshop
Facilitated by: Will Meecham, M.D., M.A.
The brain and body are one. As persons, we are an indivisible unit of flesh, organs and mind. As a result, our mental wellness depends, to a surprising extent, on our physical wellbeing. Although the brain is separated from the rest of the body's chemistry by a partial barrier, many of the chemicals that enter our bloodstreams in our foods, or get generated by our muscles and other organs, eventually enter our organ of thought and mood.
In this workshop we will explore some of these interconnections. In a series of short lectures followed by group discussion, we will see how exercise, nutrition, sleep, physical environment and other factors impact the integrity of the brain. Physical illness, pain, medications and disabilities will be considered, as well as ways we can avoid letting our body's limits impose restrictions on our mind's satisfaction. Simple steps we can take to use these influences to our advantage will be presented. We will do exercises to honestly appraise our activities, and look for ways we can improve our brain's health through changing our behaviors and surroundings. Written materials will be provided to highlight the central points, and suggest directions for further investigation.
This workshop might be viewed as a place where the information gleaned from other Advantage programs gets consolidated into a comprehensive understanding and program for living.
