True Freedom

We all want freedom to think and do what we want without someone else imposing their way on us. What we fail to realize is that we have never developed the freedom to choose how to react to every stimulus. We have true freedom only when we learn that we can choose how we react to every stimulus, including those we falsely believe we have no control over.

At a simple level, we understand that stimulus creates response and our behaviors are often affected by our reactions to various stimuli. The stimulus of hunger drives us to eat, pain makes us pull away and something we find attractive drives us to pursue it. In the case of touching a hot stove, our natural reaction to pull away is crucial to our survival. In our mental lives we often react to the stimulus of our thoughts in ways that are harmful to ourselves and others.

On a much deeper level, we can develop awareness and control of any stimulus. Mahatma Ghandi developed so much control that he was able to have surgery without anesthetic. The least we should do is learn to control our reactions to the stresses in life that we are often not even aware of. If we accept the possibility, we can eventually get to the point that we are free to choose our reaction to every circumstance and condition in life, including our mental states.

True freedom means to be able to choose the right way to respond to every stimulus, including mania, depression and schizophrenic states. No longer controlled by circumstance or condition, true freedom means that our thoughts and actions are guided by our wisdom instead of being a slave to circumstances.
