Better Functionality In All States

Bipolar disorder is a cyclical condition. It is different for everyone, but we all cycle through periods of mania and depression with periods of remission in between. Medicine, therapy, lifestyle changes, peer support, and many other things can help lengthen the periods of remission but none of them have proven completely effective at making remission permanent. It is the swings into mania and depression that are destroying so many lives.

There are many people talking about learning to thrive in spite of having bipolar disorder. For the most part they are talking about functioning during periods of remission and hoping that the periods of mania and depression won't destroy their lives when they return. Many others are choosing to pretend that they are in a permanent remission and are ignoring the real possibility that mania and depression will certainly return.

If we are to truly thrive we have to accept that we will have periods of mania and depression and find a way to thrive during them instead of only thriving during remission. Bipolar IN Order is the only program designed specifically for that purpose. This is a powerful change of perspective that is producing better results than any other program.

Bipolar IN Order does not ask you to stop using any of the tools that you have found effective. The program is compatible with whatever tools you choose to use for lowering the intensity of mania and depression and the course helps you integrate them into your own personalized program. What we do ask is to accept the possibility that you can learn to thrive during episodes. Thriving means you can create and maintain great relationships, great careers and a great life even during manic and depressive episodes.

Bipolar IN Order is a simple yet powerful education program that you can do in the privacy of your own home. Each week you will benefit from:

  • EIGHT WEEKS OF SELF-DIRECTED ONLINE EDUCATION includes instructional videos, reading assignments, and exercises that help you build a personalized plan to increase functionality and moderate the intensity of your next episodes.
  • EIGHT WEEKLY LIVE INTERACTIVE ONLINE CLASSES give everyone a chance to ask questions and review the plan they are designing while remaining anonymous if desired.
  • ONLINE DISCUSSION FORUMS where you can anonymously (if desired) share your questions, ideas and plans at any time.
  • LIVE ONLINE SUPPORT GROUPS held after the eight week course for a full year to help you adjust your plan and get the support needed to carry it out.

The Bipolar IN Order program has been taught to thousands of people since 2003 and has enthusiastic support of people who are no longer in disorder, their friends and families, doctors, therapists and many others. The program is being studied by Tufts University along with a prestigious group of experts. You can learn more about the study and sign up to participate here.

"Bipolar In Order provides the essential message that symptom reduction or elimination is far from the main goal of adaptation and intervention. Sure to challenge traditional thinking, this important work is integrative and wise."

- Stephen P. Hinshaw, PhD, Professor and Chair, Dept of Psychology, UC Berkeley

"Bipolar IN Order explores the positive value of mania and depression, linking it to Eastern traditions of mental discipline, while at the same time appreciating the need for warranted medical diagnosis and treatment."

- S. Nassir Ghaemi MD MPH Professor of Psychiatry, Director of Mood Disorders Program, Tufts Medical Center

"Tom's message-and approach-is a welcome antidote to many, popular ideas about mental illness. He integrates sound, evidence-based tools (such as self-awareness, self-care, and medication) with an especially humane perspective. Too often, in having to accept their condition, people end up feeling pathologized-reduced from a full person to a label. But Tom looks beyond the diagnosis to help people embrace-and accept-the best parts of who they are, instead of reflexively dismissing their feelings and experiences as a simple manifestation of illness. I can't think of a more important ingredient to living with bipolar disorder-or any mental health difficulty."

- Craig Malkin, PhD, Clinical Instructor in Psychology, Harvard Medical School

"I was desperate for help and Bipolar IN Order delivered. I learned how to identify my feelings, the changes in my thinking during mood swings and my initial reactions to them. Realizing I had a choice in how to respond instead of just reacting was pivotal. This tool, combined with others, has morphed into a great practice for self examination in the IN Order stages. It is one of the components that taught me discipline and self-control throughout my journey to Bipolar IN Order. What I've learned will serve me well for the rest of my life. Life is finally good."

- Jeanette Chiapperino, Weeki Wachee, FL, USA

"Our son was diagnosed Bipolar when he was 19 and there have been multiple crises and episodes since then, including a suicide attempt. We lived a life surrounded by uncertainty. The medical care he was receiving offered little hope that any of us could lead fulfilling lives free of crisis and constant worry. It was painful to watch the struggle. In our desperate search for help, we found Bipolar IN Order. After our son completed the course, we have had a remarkable transformation in our family. We have had no crisis, no interventions, and we feel we finally have our son back. We have come from a life worrying about episodes and symptoms to watching our son fulfill his life in ways we never could have imagined before. This course has brought great peace and wholeness to our family."

- Jan and Susan Sauls, Lakeland, FL

"Tom is doing something no one else is really doing. He is turning a serious mental illness on its head and suggesting that by accepting rather than fighting the disorder, people with bipolar can identify and access their strengths and lead lives that are not only satisfying but productive beyond their wildest imaginings... Tom is ahead of the pack. He is staking out new territory and leading the way in showing people with brain-based disorders like bipolar that it is possible to live richly."

- Maureen Duffy Ph.D., Professor and Chairperson, The Counseling Program, Barry University
