Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), was developed by Dr. Albert Ellis in 1955. It has since flourished and spawned a variety of other cognitive-behavior therapies (CBT). REBT's effectiveness, short-term nature, and low cost are major reasons for its popularity.
REBT's comprehensive approach works best for individuals desiring a scientific, present-focused, and active treatment for coping with life's difficulties, rather than one which is mystical, historical, and largely passive.
Three Minute Therapy is based on the pioneering writings and therapy practice of Dr. Albert Ellis, father of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), and Cognitive Therapy (CT).
Our colleague Michael Edelstein, PhD has exercises that are very effective in dealing specifically with being overwhelmed or panic attacks. He contributed to the book Bipolar IN Order. His book Three Minute Therapy has some good coping exercises for these kinds of situations.
Dr. Edelstein says our negative beliefs about depression create a secondary depression that makes things worse. Being overwhelmed by our state is very common and it is one of our important challenges, but it is not something to beat yourself up about. Tools are for Practice, Repetition, and Reinforcement so that they become effective and easy to use when needed.
